Whale Watching in Costa Rica

Posted by on August 25, 2013

Whales, Whales, Everywhere!

Starting in July, more and more Humpback Whales can be seen migrating off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. There are several whale sightseeing tours that you can do from various coastal towns. Typically the further South down our Pacific coast you go the better chances you have to see them, but they migrate up and down our coastline and there is always a chance.

My Weekend

Sometimes you can just be in the right place at the right time…

This past weekend I was on inspection tour on the Central Pacific Coast. A quick stop in Jaco for lunch and a walk on the beach I was treated to 4 Humpbacks breaching and playing only 75 meters from shore. Everyone on the beach stopped what they were doing and marveled at these beautiful creatures as they swam together playing, it was quite a show!

Even though Costa Rica is my country, I never get tired of what I see and how beautiful it is. Luck was not entirely with me, I had my camera and no batteries, but the memory will be with me for a lifetime.

I will share a client photo sent to us from a whale watching trip in Drake Bay, at least you can get an idea of these wonderful animals at play!

Whale Watching Costa Rica

Now is a great time for whale tours in Bahia Ballena as well as  Drake Bay and especially out towards Caño island! We even have some Orcas visiting us these days which is a treat. Killer Whales / Orcas are not common to our waters. Tours are leaving from Quepos, Dominical, Drake Bay, with sightings of up to 10 whales in a pod. This is also a good time to maybe find a pod of Spinner Dolphins and watch their acrobatic tricks in the same waters. The Spinners will become more and more frequent as they migrate South to North in the coming months.
