The Journey to the Summit

Hikers begin their adventure in the small town of San Gerardo de Rivas, where the trailhead to Chirripó National Park is located. The hike is challenging yet accessible, spanning approximately 19.5 kilometers (12 miles) one way. Here in Costa Rica, we are known for our diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes, it is this environment that offers a unique natural phenomenon that attracts nature enthusiasts from around the world: the Arribada. This Spanish term, meaning “arrival,” refers to the mass nesting of Olive Ridley Sea Turtles, a spectacle where thousands of turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Every year we update travelers to the best time of the year to see an Arribada. Predicting an Arribada precisely is impossible, they often start coming a week before a new moon, sometimes after, we can only hope to be in the right place at the right time when it comes to Mother Nature.

Before delving into the best times to visit, it’s essential to understand what makes arribadas so special. Olive Ridley sea turtles, although the most abundant of the sea turtles, are listed as vulnerable due to threats like poaching and habitat loss. They usually nest individually, but during an arribada, they come in thousands, offering a breathtaking and rare wildlife spectacle.

Arribadas occur several times a year, but predicting the exact timing can be challenging as it’s influenced by the moon’s cycle and ocean currents. However, in Costa Rica, the most notable Arribadas happen at Ostional Wildlife Refuge on the Nicoya Peninsula, typically between July and December. In 2024, the prime months to witness this event are expected to be between August and October.

Having said this, Arribadas of varying size happen almost monthly, and it is the darkest nights the turtles are most active so you want to plan to be in the area around a New Moon.

Today we are going to go over some of the best Family Friendly Swimming Beaches in Costa Rica for those families traveling in 2024 & beyond. Costa Rica is renowned for its extensive coastline stretching along both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. We are lucky enough to have 2 coastlines and endless stretches of beach. While many visitors aspire to bask in the tropical beauty of the country's beaches, the diverse array of choices often surprises them.

The central and southern Pacific coast boasts predominantly surfing beaches with sizable waves. In stark contrast, the far northern Pacific coast reveals tranquil coves carved into its landscape. On the Caribbean Coast, development along the beaches is minimal, except for a select few towns. Additionally, beach towns vary significantly in their setup and the activities they offer.

Playa Hermosa is the perfect destination for families seeking a peaceful beach getaway. Trip Support and Why You Need It.

A good day to you! James here, head of the travel planning department here at C.R. Referrals Travel. Today I want to talk a little about trip support and why you need it, and it starts with a little story. This is a story of a couple’s journey to Costa Rica, one that did not go as planned when it started, but had a happy ending. One sunny morning in our Atenas office, our 24-hour support line rang. On the other end of the phone was one of my travelers, “John”, there was a crisis, and John needed help! This is in part what we do, and help I was ready to give.

Let me back up a little. I had planned John’s first trip here 7 years ago. They loved it! This trip they were currently embarked on was the first time they had travelled since their first trip here and as they had explained to me, they desperately needed a vacation. I love planning return trips, and I am honored that they wanted to repeat Costa Rica as their next trip, I was delighted to hear from them when they got in touch with us. As directed, I planned a special trip in honor of that needed vacation. I even got an email from John’s boss, he told me he had been working very hard and he wanted to do something special for them at some point in the adventure. We put together a secret gift basket that was waiting for them along their journey, it was a meticulously planned adventure, and it was about to go off the rails!

Yes, on this day, the day they were to arrive and start their Costa Rica adventure, John and his wife missed the connecting flight. John was now on the phone with me telling me about the situation.

Now because John’s original arrival flight was early in the morning, and they were eager, the plan was to hit the ground running. On arrival to SJO airport we had arranged a private transfer to Cahuita where he was to spend the next few nights before heading off to Bocas del Toro, Panama. On Day 2 of his trip, he had tours, and so on…

John finally managed to get another flight that same day but instead of arriving at 10am, he was now arriving at 11pm. John could have panicked, he could have thrown his fists in the air cursing the travel gods, but instead he kept a cool head and he called us, 1 call, and everything on the Costa Rica side of the equation was taken care of. With an evening arrival, we got him a room for the arrival near the airport, we rearranged the private transfer that was taking him to Cahuita for the following day, we rearranged the tour that was supposed to happen that following day, and we let the hotel in Cahuita know that John would be a day later… 1 call. That’s it. His trip was back on track without any stress.

This is a good example of why 24-hour trip support is so important when you are traveling and the reason for the post today. John could have been in the position to try and reach out to multiple companies here in Costa Rica. Dealing with language barriers, international phone rates, and the stress of trying to do it all from an airport. Instead, he just made the 1 call. Within the hour everything was fixed.

Make sure that whoever you are working with, whoever is planning your trip, make sure they offer this. If John had booked everything independently, he would be trying to make multiple international calls to Costa Rica to try and rearrange everything on his own, in a language he does not speak, while also trying to sort out his flights. If he had worked with a company that did not provide real customer support with a human being, only automated services, then things would not have gone as well.

It is that time of year again, our yearly Arribada update! So when is the best time to see an Arribada in Costa Rica in 2023? Before we get deeper into that, let’s talk about this amazing show of nature. For those who have not heard an arribada, also known as a mass nesting event, is a phenomenon that occurs in some species of sea turtles, in which large numbers of females come ashore to lay their eggs in a single location. This typically occurs at night and can involve thousands or even tens of thousands of turtles nesting over a several day period.

In Costa Rica, arribadas are most commonly associated with the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle, which is one of the most abundant sea turtle species in the world. Costa Rica is home to several important nesting sites for the Olive Ridley, including Playa Nancite in the Santa Rosa National Park, and Playa Ostional in the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge.

Visitors to Costa Rica may have the opportunity to witness an Arribada if they visit one of these nesting sites during the appropriate season. However, it is important to note that sea turtle nesting is a protected activity in Costa Rica, and visitors should only observe the turtles with the guidance of a trained and authorized guide. Costa Rica Volunteer Adventures

Just wanted to take a minute to talk a little about some of my favorite trips to plan, our Costa Rica Volunteer Adventures. Spend part of your time as a wildlife volunteer and the rest on an epic adventure of a lifetime! The trips we create can take many shapes! There are several options for those looking to get more involved when visiting Costa Rica. If you want to get up close and personal with sloths, volunteering is the best way to do it! On the other hand, if you want to visit an orphanage or organic farm, these options are also available. We will match your interests when creating your adventure.

For example, In the Arenal Volcano area I love sending travelers to Proyecto Asis Wildlife Rescue Center for a half day or full day wildlife volunteer experience. Here you work with orphaned monkeys, sloths, and other wildlife. These rescue facilitates are vital to helping those that have no voice in this world. The goal is always to release animals once they have healed but in some cases this is not possible due to injury or trauma. These facilities take care of the needs of our most beloved and treasured neighbors.

If you are a dog lover like me you may want to volunteer at one of our dog shelters here in Costa Rica! There are several that can always use a helping hand. Territorio de Zaguates is probably the most famous, well known for their EPIC dog hikes, this is also an EPIC ADD ON for our trips! Imagine yourself hiking through the fields with several hundred dogs as your guide! We can help make that happen.

A volunteer adventure adds a deeper meaning to a trip and it helps the local communities you visit. After all, giving back to our communities we share the world with is the greatest gift we can give. We do not take any commissions for any volunteer elements in any of our trips. Our feeling has always been that money spent on this stays with the rescue facility in its entirety.

Costa Rica Travel News & Covid Updates

As of November 1st our countries borders are open to all countries and travelers from around the world. There is no more Covid-19 testing requirement to enter Costa Rica but the travelers insurance requirement is still in place. This is good news for many who have been feeling cabin fever over the last 8 months, but travel has changed.

The only big change is that now we all travel with care, common sense is all you need to navigate travel during this time, and to do it safely. Here in Costa Rica all of our hotels, tours, and transfers are taking all necessary precautions, new sanitary protocols are in place. We are planning a lot more fully private tours by request from our clients which limits exposure to other travelers while they enjoy everything Costa Rica has to offer.

Throughout Costa Rica the tourism industry is more than ready to see some more movement, and there are travel deals to be found! Right now at C.R. So far bookings for 2021 are very strong but the remainder of this year will largely be more local tourism. We love our beaches and Costa Ricans are also taking advantage of some of the incredible travel deals some hotels are offering. This is a good time to start planning a trip early, get in on the lower rates for a trip next year. It is hard to predict the coming high season, travel over the holidays is certainly down before picking back up in January.

We are still adding some tour ideas for inspiration on the new website, with all the time off we used it to launch the new travel site and hope that everyone can navigate it okay. Stay tuned for some new tours and added content in the website!

We have suspended many of the Cultural Costa Rica tours we had due to Covid-19. These trips visit remote indigenous villages and with Covid we do not want to spread this in any way to remote communities. When things improve we will be adding in some more Costa Rica cultural tours.

Catalina has been VERY busy with her side project Elope in Costa Rica. In addition to all the weddings that had to be rescheduled in 2020 her 2021 season is filling.

Covid-19 Travel Updates – Updated Country List

Costa Rica continues increasing the countries from which it will welcome foreign tourists.

Requirements for tourists visiting Costa Rica

Tourists wishing to visit Costa Rica via a flight must comply with these requirements:

Complete the online “Health Pass” epidemiological form: https://salud.go.cr.
Show proof of a negative RT-PCR test for the coronavirus. The sample for the test must have been taken no more than 72 hours before departure. For a multi-flight itinerary, the departure time of the first flight is used.
Obtain travel insurance. This can be either a pre-approved Costa Rican policy from INS or Sagicor, or an international policy that covers COVID-19 medical expenses of at least $50,000 and $2,000 for lodging. Tourists with homes/property in Costa Rica can contact seguros@ict.go.cr and request an exception to the lodging insurance portion.

Tourists must have remained in an authorized country for at least 14 days before travel.

Authorized countries for Costa Rica tourism

This is the list currently in effect:

UNITED STATES: Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Wyoming California and Ohio.
- As of Oct. 15: Residents of Florida, Georgia and Texas.
- As of Nov 01: All U.S. citizens and residents.
CANADA: All citizens and residents.
MEXICO: All citizens and residents.
THE EUROPEAN UNION SCHENGEN ZONE: All citizens and residents.
UNITED KINGDOM: All citizens and residents.
CENTRAL AMERICA (including PANAMA): All citizens and residents as of Oct. 15.
SOUTH AMERICA: Citizens and residents of Uruguay.
THE CARIBBEAN: Citizens and residents of Jamaica.
ASIA: Citizens and residents of Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, and the People’s Republic of China.
OCEANIA: Citizens and residents of Australia and New Zealand.

Requirements for citizens and residents

Costa Rican citizens and residents can fly to Costa Rica from any country, regardless of whether or not it’s on the authorized list.

Here are the entry requirements for citizens:

Here are the entry requirements for residents (permanent, temporary, special categories or estancias):

Complete the Health Pass.
Present a valid DIMEX card.
Have proof of current payment into the Caja OR have travel insurance that covers COVID-19 with a minimum coverage of 22 days. Residents without current Caja payments will be obligated to catch up on payments within those 22 days.

Citizens and residents are issued a 14-day home quarantine upon their arrival to Costa Rica. However, they are exempted from the isolation order if they come from an approved country and obtained a negative PCR coronavirus test prior to travel.
